ImageThis Dewalya is found on a small hillock after passing the Free Trade Zone and the Army Camp along Galle Matara Road. There is nothing of archaeological  or historical importance  around Koggala .  Hirigal Dewalaya is the only place which has , at least some historical importance. You can find some drawings on the lime stones  near the Dewalaya.

There is a beautiful description of Hirigal Dewalaya in the preface to  ‘Gamperaliya’, the popular novel written by Martin Wickremasinghe, the doyen of Sinhala  Literature of the 19th century . He says this Dewalaya  has been listening to the  cries, wailings, smiles etc of the villagers  around who came to invoke divine assistance to their pleading. The Hirigal Dealaya , he says, had been listening to all of them  completely unmoved by their pleading .  His description  given there  depicts the  Koggala village at the turn of the 19th century.
